Hello, all. I'm hoping someone can help me with some MongoDB questions, or
at least point me in a direction for further study.
I'm a game designer and a big part of my job is balancing character stats,
economy stuff, etc. This data is usually stored in .xml or .json files, so
I generally write an Excel tool that imports these files as spreadsheets
for editing, and then writes the updated files back out again. This saves
me a huge amount of time and prevents lots of data-entry errors.
I recently joined a new company that is using MongoDB to store and manage
game data. I'd still like to be able to import and export this data using
Excel, so how should I approach this problem? (NOTE: I can write a little
code but I am NOT a programmer.)
We purchased licenses for MongoChef, which allows me to export and import
using .json (and I believe .csv), but I'm not yet sure if this can be
automated. (From Excel using, for example, command line calls.)
I see that MongoDB has command line options for importing and exporting,
but I'm also seeing warnings about compatibility issues between JSON and
Of course, a potential problem with both possible solutions above is that I
will have to export a collection (or the entire database) to .json, make my
changes in Excel, and then import everything again. I assume this would
overwrite any changes made between export and import, right? (There are
four other people who might access the database.)
